Product overview

Regardless of the appearance

There are two main classes of viscoelastic materials, cohesive and dispersive, and they behave differently.

  • Cohesive OVDs are substances containing long chain molecules and are therefore characterized by high molecular weight and high viscosity. These resources tend to preserve space when there is minimal movement.
  • Dispersive OVDs exhibit the opposite properties, as they have a lower viscosity and the ability to adhere and coat.

Other intermediate forms, such as coheso-dispersive OVDs, are designed to adapt to the different stages of the surgery. At rest it assumes cohesive properties (e.g. during capsulorhexis), and under stress it behaves dispersively (e.g. during phacoemulsification).

Regardless of the origin

With a few exceptions, a large part of the current visco-elastics (OVDs) are based on HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) or hyaluronic acid (HA) of animal origin (rooster comb) or bacterial/bio-fermented (Streptococcus)

blue

Pe-Ha-Blue® PLUS | Albomed

Pe-Ha-Blue® PLUS combines the outstanding viscoelastic properties of Pe-Ha-Luron® F with trypan blue. In addition to the common functions of viscoelastic solutions, this combination also increases the contrast for the surgeon, which leads to more safety during the procedure. Pe-Ha-Blue® PLUS is provided as a sterile product in a ready-to-use syringe.

Rayner Visco-elastics

With Ophteis, Ophteis+ and OphteisMAX, Rayner offers a complete range of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVD) made from hyaluronic acid of animal origin. The specific combination of different concentrations of HA and a high molecular weight has led to three distinct products with exemplary and complementary pseudoplastic qualities. The range manufactured in Sweden offers an optically clear OVD with no bubbles and can be stored at room temperature. There is also a HPMC-based alternative called Methylvisc.
