The TearLab Osmolarity System is the first objective and quantitative test for the diagnosis and care of patients with dry eye. A fast and accurate result is obtained in just a few seconds while using only 50 nanoliters (NL). The TearLab system is intended to measure the osmolarity of human tears in patients showing signs of dry eye and this in combination with other methods of clinical evaluation.
The hyperosmolarity has been described in the literature as the primary marker of tear film integrity. When the amount or quality of tears secreted is modified, the increase in the evaporation rate induces a concentrated tear film and therefore an increase in osmolarity indicating an imbalanced tear film.
